These two posters were developed to share research findings on mercury in Arctic freshwater and marine ecosystems in an accessible way for the Cambridge Bay community.
Originally created as part of Marlene Evans' long-term Northern Contaminants Program (NCP) project, Temporal Trends and Spatial Variations of Mercury in Sea-run Arctic Char from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, this monitoring initiative has been ongoing since 2004. Heidi Swanson joined the project in 2025 and now plays a leading role in its continued development.
Research on freshwater fish began with studies in Greiner Lake, supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Through collaborations with Milla Rautio and funding from ArcticNet, POLAR, and now FROST, the work has expanded to include several Arctic lakes. In 2025, the NCP officially incorporated freshwater fish into its long-term monitoring program, strengthening the partnership between these complementary research initiatives.
Together, the NCP and FROST programs combine long-term environmental monitoring with targeted research on the impacts of environmental change, while supporting new graduate student projects and providing communities with clear, accessible information about mercury in northern aquatic ecosystems.
