In brief
Chelsi McNeill-Jewer is an early-career researcher and the Research Director at the Sapujiyiit Society, a grassroots Inuit-led organization based in Chesterfield Inlet and Coral Harbour, Nunavut.
In her role with the Sapujiyiit Society, Chelsi works to strengthen Inuit self-determination by centering Traditional Knowledge, land-based learning, youth mentorship, and community-led Guardianship within academic research and policy. Her leadership reflects a vision of research that is grounded in community priorities — from youth safety and hunting support to ocean protection and equitable economic opportunities.
Chelsi is currently leading the creation of the Foxe Basin Research and Stewardship Network, funded by the Marine Environmental Observation and Response Network (MEOPAR). This initiative connects Inuit communities with academic researchers, government agencies, and NGOs to advance Inuit-led stewardship, research, and policy advocacy across Foxe Basin and Hudson Bay.
Her work builds bridges between northern communities and southern institutions, ensuring Inuit voices guide decision-making about Arctic lands and waters. Deeply committed to reconciliation, equity, and environmental responsibility, Chelsi’s approach supports the next generation of Inuit leaders in stewardship and science.
